Better Off: Flipping the Switch on Technology - a fascinating book about one couple who decides to live off the grid for a year and assess what, and how much, technology they want in their lives.

The Self-Reliant Homesteader - A mixed review for this book. It provides a nice overview of the various activities you might want to explore. Much of it is more suited to the rural homesteader and it doesn't provide quite as much detail as I'd like to see.
